Group A: Tunisia overtook the Democratic Republic of Congo into the top spot in Group A at the weekend after a 2-1 triumph in Rades following goals from Yassine Meriah and Ghailene Chaalali. However, even though they hold a three-point advantage over the Leopards—nine points to six—the Central Africans would retake top spot on goal difference if they win in Kinshasa on Thursday. Libya, still pointless, aren’t mathematically out but would be if Tunisia avoids defeat, while Guinea needs a win to remain in (faint) contention.
Group B: Nigeria’s eye-catching 4-0 rout of Cameroon in Uyo has allowed the Super Eagles to take a firm grip on top spot, and they’d secure passage to Russia with a win against Africa’s beleaguered champions in Yaounde on Monday evening unless Zambia win. A Cameroon win would take them four points behind Nigeria, but with only two to play, they’d still be outsiders. The Chipolopolo downed Algeria in Lusaka to move up to four points, while the Fennecs—on one point—are all but out of the running.
Group C: This has essentially come down to a two-horse race—barring a remarkable turnaround from Gabon or Mali—after Ivory Coast and Morocco moved up to seven and five points respectively. The Elephants have the edge after holding Morocco to a draw in Marrakesh in November, while the Atlas Lions’ failure to beat Gabon in Franceville in October may also cost them. Expect the duo to defeat the Panthers and the Aiglons again this week, keeping us en route to a dramatic showdown in Bouake in Matchday Six.
Group D: There’s little to separate the quartet in this pool, with only two points between leaders Burkina Faso and fourth-placed Cape Verde. South Africa and Senegal both missed ideal opportunities to take control of the pool over the weekend but could make amends in Durban and Ouagadougou respectively on Tuesday. Burkina Faso would surely leave Senegal with too much to do if they secure all three points in the West African derby at the Stade du 4 Aout.
Group E: Uganda’s shock victory over Egypt has moved the Cranes up to top spot with three games to play. They appear well placed to become East Africa’s maiden World Cup representatives if they can avoid defeat against the Pharaohs in Alexandria, where the North African giants will be without injured talisman Essam El-Hadary. Ghana, held by Congo-Brazzaville at the weekend, would remain at least three points off the pace with a win at the Stade Municipal de Kintele. Without the absent Ayew Brothers or Asamoah Gyan, the Black Stars surely have too much to do.
