by Femi Asu The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation spent a total of N905.27bn on petrol subsidy in eight months amid rising global oil prices, the latest data obtained from the corporation show. With the international oil benchmark, Brent crude, nearing $80 per barrel on Monday (up 2.07 per cent at $79.71 per barrel as of 7:00pm Nigerian time), the landing cost of imported petrol and subsidy are expected to increase. The Federal Government had in March 2020 removed petrol subsidy after reducing the pump price of the product to N125 per litre from N145 following the sharp drop in crude oil prices. The NNPC, which has been the sole importer of petrol into the country in recent years, has been bearing the subsidy cost since it resurfaced. Data from ...

Sunday Aborisade The Federal Inland Revenue Service may lose over N2.4tn revenue to the 36 state governments in 2022 if it loses its appeal against a Federal High Court verdict which barred it from collecting the Value Added Tax and Personal Income Tax. The N2.4tn is what the FIRS projects to collect from the VAT if retains the authority to collect consumption based tax, a document available to our correspondent has shown. The FHC sitting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, had on August 10 ruled that states and not the FIRS have the legal rights to collect VAT and income tax. Who were the most barbaric colonizers in history?

Image
Ziaddinè Chahoudi I’m surprised when it comes to the question, no one ever mentions this nation: Russia This country has conquered a large chunk of territory and their invasions against their neighboring countries, as well as subsequent treatments of the neighboring people, can allow Russia (including former USSR and Imperial eras) to be one of the worst colonizers in the history. They invade, and colonize some for a brief of times, both with different methods but all can be listed as “colonialism”. Here is how the Russians conquered: Poland: the Russians massacred and murdered many Poles throughout the Russian Deluge at 1650s to 1989, the day Russia had officially stopped its oppression of Poland. It is unclear how many Poles were slaughtered prior to Katyn, but it could have reached 1 million, very much that time. Following genocide in Katyn, the raze of Warsaw, and communist rule, Poland was brutally looted, stolen and taken by Russians away from their country. Ukraine: Ukrainians h...

Why is an AK-47 so dangerous?

Image
Pavel Fekula The AK family of weapons are simple, reliable, easy to manufacture and they work. Their long-stroke gas piston design might not be the lightest or most elegant design, but it works. Sure, there are more accurate and better engineered guns out there these days. However, the AK is legendary, because of its reliability. The gun has a reputation of being able to keep running no matter what its owners put it through.

19-year-old candidate who sued JAMB for N1bn handed over to police

the UTME score, the candidate’s father, John Ifenkpam, approached an Enugu-based lawyer, Ikeazor Akaiwe, who wrote to JAMB for another opportunity for the boy to retake the examination and demanded N1 billion as damages. According to Oloyede, the lawyer said the N1 billion was to cover for the physical and emotional trauma the boy had been through from being offered “two separate scores.” The candidate was said to have claimed that his UTME scores from 2019 till 2021 had been “altered” by the board, thereby denying him the opportunity to study his desired course — Medicine. On Friday, the candidate, his father and lawyer travelled to Abuja from Enugu State following an invitation by the management of the board led by Oloyede. Initially, the boy was given few minutes to “come clean” in a closed session with his father and lawyers about the results he was parading but insisted that his original score from the examination was 380. After back and forth, the board tendered evidence to...
