Published by PUNCH  September 27, 2020 Jonah Jang   Jonah Jang, a former Plateau State Governor and ex-military governor of Benue and Gongola states, takes JAMES ABRAHAM back to the time Nigeria got independence and how things became worse You are in your 70s and was a teenager when Nigeria got independence, what was Nigeria like at the time? Nigeria was far better than what it is today. As a teenager in a secondary school then, I never paid school fees. I went to a boarding senior primary school. I lost my father when I was in primary four and my school sponsorship was never a burden on anyone. I don’t know whether I was...

All 158 Army Officers on board were killed, including 8 foreign nationals. The aircraft was taking off at high weight and its three engines failed. The aircraft was serial number 911.[ The 26th of September, 1992 was a Saturday and a tragedy of monumental proportion silently crept into the world’s most populous black nation. It was a disaster so great that it left the country’s military President and her Generals in tears, reducing them to babies. The NAF 911 was overloaded. The turnout of passengers that day was so large that 48 officers were not able to even board it. A naval officer who was a former military administrator of Ondo State was said to have stormed out of the plane when he felt the pre-flight test was taking too much of his time. He was not ...

The Origin of Modern Schooling

Image
Photos:   Whether in colonial Madagascar of 1908 (top of page) or 1920s America (above), public schools have evolved in remarkably similar ways. All around the world, students attend schools which have an astonishing degree of similarity. Children are required to attend. It runs from kindergarten to grade 12. Students are divided by age, not by what they need or want to learn, nor by what they’ve already learned. The teacher is the authority. The children provide heads which the teacher is supposed to fill. There is little or no opportunity for students to explore a subject in depth, to develop a passion, to hone a skill. There’s an hour for one subject, then an hour for another. Teachers are considered qualified if, and only if, they have the required certificate. Whether they can teach well is irrelevant. Whether they love or hate children is irrelevant. Curriculum is fixed, and taught at a fixed rate, even if that doesn’t work for some students… even if it doesn’t work fo...
