The ECHR unanimously confirms the absence of the right to same-sex marriage

Image
On June 9, 2016, the European Court delivered its decision in the case of Chapin and Charpentier v. France (n°40183/07). It questioned the annulment by the French courts of the “Bègles marriage” celebrated in 2004 between two men, in violation of French law. With this decision, the European Court of Human Rights unanimously recalls that the European Convention on Human Rights does not include a right to marriage for homosexual couples, both in terms of the right to respect for private and family life (art. 8) as well as that of marrying and founding a family (art. 12). More precisely, this new decision confirms a series of judgments, recalling in particular that: the question of homosexual marriage is “governed by the national laws of the Contracting States” (§ 36, referring to the Schalk and Kopf v. Austria (n°30141/04); Article 12 enshrined the traditional concept of marriage, namely the union of a man and a woman" and "did not impose on the respondent government the obliga...

10 Things You Should Know about Islam

Image
by: A. S. Ibrahim This article is part of the  10 Things You Should Know  series. Thinking Critically about Islam I always teach my students to distinguish between Islam and Muslims. Islam is a world religion with adherents composing about 20% of the entire population on earth. They are called Muslims. As Christians, we are called to love everyone and preach the good news of Jesus Christ to every human being, including Muslims. We are not called to accept, follow, or love any ideology, but rather, in discernment and wisdom and based on biblical fidelity, we should test every thought and claim. Distinguishing Islam from Muslims is important, as we are called to love Muslims as Christ does, but it is important to think critically and biblically about the claims of Islam and subject them to the word of God and what it teaches. Here I offer you ten things you should know about Islam. 1. Islam means submission and surrender. In many circles in the West, I hear people say that the t...

How to be a Stoic: (and why you can't actually be one)

Image
Stoicism has seen a resurgence in popularity in the 21st century. It is the latest interpretation of an ancient philosophy. Why is an interesting but different question. Here we'll explore what Stoicism is, philosophically, and how to put that into practice. It's important to note that Stoicism doesn't refer to a loose collection of ideas. Rather, it was founded in the early years of the 3rd century BC by Zeno of Citium as a self-defined, conscious movement. So, what is Stoicism? "Virtue is the only good." That statement is the foundation of Stoic philosophy, the idea upon which all the rest is built. For a Stoic, the only route to a fulfilling life is virtuous action - doing the right thing. By fulfilling I mean a life which is deeply meaningful and worthwhile. You could use the word happiness instead, but that doesn't carry the same weight. I'm not going to explore the Four Cardinal Virtues of Stoicism (wisdom, courage, justice, temperance) because that ...

What is the darkest historical fact you know?

In ancient China, there was a form of execution called腰斬; 腰斩 (yāo zhǎn) . His name implies a person literally cut in half at the waist. It was reserved for only the most dangerous criminals, as many people did not die immediately after being cut down. In the Qing dynasty, an official was caught embezzling money and was sentenced to have his waist cut. However, he stayed alive long enough to write, using his blood, the Chinese character '慘' (horrible/brutal) 7 times before finally dying. Hearing this story, the Yongzheng Emperor was shocked and abolished the form of execution.
